Best Adjustable Benches for a Home Gym (2026): 6 Picks and What to Check

After a barbell and a pair of kettlebells, an adjustable bench is the piece that multiplies what you can do at home. Flat, it handles bench presses and rows. Inclined, it gives you incline presses and supported rows. Upright, it turns into a seat for shoulder presses. And for hybrid athletes it is also the box for step-ups and the back support for Bulgarian split squats, two of the best single-leg drills for HYROX lunges.
The problem: most benches on Amazon look alike in a product photo. The differences that matter (how stable the frame is, the gap between seat and back pad, how wide the pad is, whether it declines and whether it folds) are buried in spec sheets. This guide sorts the adjustable benches you can actually buy on Amazon by what you need them for. We checked every listing on Amazon on October 9, 2026, and compared it with the published testing of Garage Gym Reviews, whose team tested more than 50 benches and scores them on stability, construction, training experience, padding and adjustability. These are research reviews, not hands-on tests. Our sourcing rules are at How We Test.
The short answer
| Pick | Best for | Listed capacity | Decline | Folds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FLYBIRD WB5 Adjustable Bench | Best value for most home gyms | 800 lb | Yes | Yes |
| YOLEO Adjustable Weight Bench | Best folding bench with a leg holder | 827 lb (ASTM-certified) | Yes | Yes |
| BowFlex 5.1S Bench | Most stable, stores upright | 600 lb | Yes | Stows upright |
| Marcy Assembly-Free Adjustable Bench | No assembly, small spaces | 600 lb | Check listing | Yes |
| FLYBIRD Utility Adjustable Bench | Budget pick with leg holder | 750 lb | Yes | Yes |
| Marcy Multi-Position Utility Bench | Light use and decline core work | 400 lb (listing) | Yes | No |
Capacity is the figure each brand lists on Amazon. Brands measure it differently, so treat it as a guide, not a guarantee.
Before you buy: five things that matter
- Stability first. A bench that rocks or slides when you press is the one thing you cannot fix later. A wide, heavy base and rubber feet matter more than the number of positions.
- The seat gap. Almost every adjustable bench has a gap between the seat and the back pad. Garage Gym Reviews measured about 2 inches on the FLYBIRD. Smaller is more comfortable when the bench is flat; premium “zero gap” benches remove it but are not sold on Amazon.
- Pad width. Garage Gym Reviews puts the industry standard at 11.5 to 12 inches. Narrower pads (the FLYBIRD is about 10 inches) are fine for dumbbell work but feel less secure under a heavy barbell.
- Decline or not. Decline helps for core work and decline presses. If you only press flat and incline, you do not need it, and benches without it are usually more stable.
- Folding and storage. In an apartment or a shared garage, a bench that folds or stands on end is worth more than an extra 100 lb of capacity you will never use.
The picks
1. FLYBIRD WB5 Adjustable Bench — best value
- Listed at 800 lb, ASTM-certified, with a double-locking adjustment
- Flat, incline, decline and upright positions
- Weighs 28.5 lb and folds for storage
- Garage Gym Reviews’ “best ultra-budget incline weight bench”
This is the bench most people should start with. It was the most reviewed adjustable bench on Amazon when we checked, and it is the only adjustable bench sold on Amazon that gets an award from Garage Gym Reviews. The trade-offs they point out are the ones you would expect at this level: a narrow pad (about 10 inches) and a seat gap of about 2 inches. For dumbbell presses, rows, step-ups and split squats, neither is a problem.
2. YOLEO Adjustable Weight Bench — best folding bench with a leg holder
- ASTM-certified to 827 lb of load, with a maximum user weight of 330 lb stated on the listing
- 7 back positions, 4 seat positions and 3 leg-holder positions
- Folds flat; weighs about 23 lb
The YOLEO is the other heavily reviewed bench in this class, and its listing is unusually clear about the difference between load capacity and user weight: the frame is certified to 827 lb, but the maximum user weight is 330 lb. The adjustable leg holder makes decline sit-ups and decline presses easier to set up than on benches without one.
3. BowFlex 5.1S Bench — most stable, stores upright
- 6 positions: flat, 30, 45, 60 and 90 degrees, plus decline
- 600 lb load capacity and a removable leg hold-down brace
- About 70 lb, much heavier than the folding benches here
- Stands on end for storage, which Bowflex says saves over 50% of floor space
If stability matters more to you than weight or price, this is the step up. At roughly 70 lb it is more than twice as heavy as the folding benches above, and that mass is what keeps a bench planted when you press. Garage Gym Reviews tested it but did not give it an award, so treat it as a solid mid-range option rather than a top pick. When we checked, it was sold through a third-party offer rather than with a direct Amazon buy button, so confirm shipping to your address before you order.
4. Marcy Assembly-Free Adjustable Bench — no assembly, small spaces
- Arrives pre-built: unfold it and train
- 8 back positions and 5 seat positions with a locking knob
- 600 lb weight limit on the listing; 2-inch high-density foam
- Folds and has a carry handle
If you would rather not spend an evening lining up bolts, this is the easy option: Marcy ships this bench fully built. The listing does not spell out a decline angle, so if decline matters to you, check the photos and questions on the listing first.
5. FLYBIRD Utility Adjustable Bench — budget pick with a leg holder
- 750 lb certified capacity on the listing
- 8 back, 4 seat and 3 leg-holder positions
- Folds; weighs about 23 lb
This is FLYBIRD’s other big seller and a close alternative to the WB5. It adds a three-position leg holder, which makes decline work easier. If the WB5 is out of stock in the size or color you want, this is the bench to look at next.
6. Marcy Multi-Position Utility Bench — light use and decline core work
- Incline, flat and decline back pad
- 4 thigh and ankle roller pads
- Steel tube frame with powder-coat finish
This is a simple bench for dumbbell work and core training rather than heavy barbell pressing. Be aware of a mismatch: the Amazon listing gives a 400 lb weight limit, while Garage Gym Reviews lists 300 lb. If you are a heavier lifter or plan to press heavy, choose one of the benches above.
The best adjustable benches you cannot buy on Amazon
To be straight with you: the benches that Garage Gym Reviews ranks highest are not sold on Amazon when we checked, so we cannot link them here. Their best overall adjustable bench is the REP Fitness AB-4100, their best budget adjustable bench is the REP AB-3100, and their most versatile is the Ironmaster Super Bench Pro V2. Rogue’s adjustable benches are also sold only on Rogue’s own site. If you want one of those, buy it from the brand directly. We do not earn anything from those purchases.
How a bench fits HYROX and hybrid training
A bench is not a HYROX station, but it earns its place in a hybrid home gym because it supports the strength work that makes the stations easier:
| Exercise | Bench position | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Bulgarian split squat | Flat (rear foot on the pad) | Single-leg strength for the 100 m sandbag lunges |
| Step-ups | Flat | Knee drive and leg endurance for the sled push and lunges |
| Incline dumbbell press | 30–45 degrees | Pressing strength for wall balls |
| Chest-supported row | 30–45 degrees | Upper-back strength for the sled pull and rowing |
For the full station-by-station list of what to buy for HYROX at home, see our HYROX workout equipment guide. To build a session around these lifts, pair them with the workouts in HYROX WOD: 6 workouts.
How to adjust an incline bench safely
- Take all weight off and stand the dumbbells on the floor before you change the angle.
- Pull the pin or knob fully, move the back pad to the new slot and let the pin click all the way in. Push down on the pad to check it is locked.
- Move the seat with the back pad: a slightly raised seat stops you sliding down on steep inclines.
- For flat pressing, make sure the seat and back pad sit level so the gap does not tilt your hips.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an adjustable bench, or is a flat bench enough?
A flat bench covers bench presses, rows, step-ups and split squats. An adjustable bench adds incline and seated pressing and chest-supported rows. If you train with dumbbells and want variety, the adjustable bench is worth it. If you mainly bench press heavy with a barbell, a sturdy flat bench is cheaper and usually more stable.
What weight capacity do I need?
Add your body weight to the heaviest weight you will lift on the bench, then leave plenty of margin. Garage Gym Reviews notes that the average bench is rated around 600 lb and that brands measure capacity differently, so a higher number is not automatically a sturdier bench.
What is the seat gap and does it matter?
It is the space between the seat and the back pad on an adjustable bench. A gap of about 2 inches is common on budget benches. It matters most when the bench is flat, where a big gap can be uncomfortable under your lower back. Benches with a very small gap cost more and are mostly sold outside Amazon.
Can I use a weight bench for HYROX training?
Yes, for the strength side: split squats, step-ups, presses and rows. It does not replace running or station practice, but it is one of the most useful pieces of gear for a home setup.
Is a folding bench stable enough?
For dumbbell training and moderate barbell work, the folding benches here are fine. The trade-off is weight: lighter benches move more. If you press heavy or train hard every day, the heavier BowFlex 5.1S is the more stable choice on this list.
