There is no best HYROX shoe. There are two schools of footwear for this race, they are built on opposite priorities, and which one is right for you depends entirely on where you are losing time. This guide tells you which school you belong to before it tells you what to buy.

The two schools
A HYROX race is 8 km of running interrupted by eight stations. Those two halves want opposite things from a shoe.
Running wants cushioning, a rocker, and a midsole that gives energy back. The stations want the exact opposite: a flat, firm, wide platform that does not compress or roll when there is 152 kg on the other end of a sled. Every shoe on the market is a compromise between those two, and the compromise it picks is what you are actually choosing between.

Which school are you?
Do not answer this from preference. Answer it from your splits.
- Your run splits hold up but the sleds destroy you. You are a School B buyer. Grip and a stable platform will save you more time than a percentage point of energy return ever will.
- You move the sled fine but the running legs fall apart. You are a School A buyer. You need a shoe that does not punish you over 8 km, and you will accept some slip at the sled to get it.
- Neither stands out. You want the shoe that gives away the least everywhere rather than the one that wins any single station. Start with the Nano.
- You have not raced yet. You do not know your weakness, and buying a specialist shoe for a weakness you have not confirmed is how people end up with three pairs. Start with an all-rounder.
What each station actually demands from a shoe
The race is identical everywhere in the world and always in this order. Loads shown are the Open division; Pro raises the sled push to 175 kg for men and 125 kg for women, which changes the grip calculation considerably.

Notice that exactly one station — rowing — does not care what is on your feet, and that the two sleds care more than everything else combined. That is the whole argument for School B in one line.

Why it matters here. That 78.2% forefoot energy return is the number to pay attention to. Over eight kilometres broken into eight separate one-kilometre efforts, you restart your running rhythm eight times, and each restart costs energy you do not get back. A shoe that returns more of what you put in matters more in HYROX than it does in a continuous 10K, because you are paying the acceleration tax repeatedly.
Where it gives ground. The 37.4 mm heel is tall. It is within the stable range, but if you already feel wobbly in the farmers carry, this is not the shoe that fixes it.
Best for: Runners who are already comfortable on the stations and want to protect their run splits.

2. HOKA Mach 7

Why it matters here. Coefficient of friction is the single most useful published number for HYROX, and almost nobody quotes it. The sled push is where running shoes fail visibly — the forefoot slips, you lose drive, and you burn the legs you need for the next kilometre. At 0.62 CoF wet, the Mach 7 is the running shoe least likely to do that to you.
Where it gives ground. The fit runs snug and the heel counter is stiff. If you have had Achilles trouble, try before you commit.
Best for: Runners who lose the most time at the sleds and refuse to give up cushioning.

3. ASICS Gel-Noosa Tri 16

Why it matters here. 0.79 CoF at the forefoot is an outlier figure. The Noosa is built for triathlon — it is designed to be pulled on with wet feet and driven hard immediately, which happens to describe the transition from a 1 km run into a sled push fairly well. Light, grippy, flexible, and it costs less than most of this list.
Where it gives ground. Upper longevity is the recurring complaint, and the energy return is unremarkable. This is a race-day shoe more than a six-days-a-week trainer.
Best for: Athletes who want maximum forefoot bite without moving to a gym trainer.

4. New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Trainer
What Amazon shoppers actually buy · Research review — not yet tested in training
The first organic result Amazon returns for “hyrox shoes” — and it appears on none of the editorial lists.
Why it matters here. We include this one for an honest reason: it is what Amazon puts in front of people searching for HYROX footwear, and it has accumulated a substantial review history doing so. Independent lab measurements for this model are not published, so we are not going to pretend we have numbers we do not have. What we can say is that it is a highly cushioned trainer built for repeated hard efforts, and that a large number of buyers arriving from HYROX-related searches have kept it.
Where it gives ground. No independent lab data. Treat our placement here as a note about what the market is buying, not as a performance endorsement.
Best for: Runners who want maximum cushioning and are prepared to give up grip at the sled.

5. PUMA Velocity Nitro 4

Why it matters here. 41.1% more flexible than average matters at the burpee broad jumps, where a stiff forefoot fights you on every landing and takeoff. Combined with a 33.7 mm heel — low enough to stay stable under the farmers carry — this is arguably the most balanced running shoe here on paper.
Where it gives ground. Only a small number of buyer reviews so far, and the midsole firms up in the cold. We are listing it as a secondary pick rather than a headline one until the review history fills out.
Best for: Athletes who want a running shoe that does not punish them at the plyometric stations.

School B — the trainers
These protect your stations. One thing to say up front, because it matters: independent lab measurements are not published for gym trainers the way they are for running shoes. There is no lab quoting you a coefficient of friction for a Metcon. So the sections below describe construction and design intent rather than numbers — and where we do not have a figure, we do not invent one.
6. Nike Metcon 9
Best for the sleds · Research review — not yet tested in training
The strongest combination of buyer rating and review volume in this entire guide.
Why it matters here. The Metcon platform exists to stop your foot moving when there is load on it. Wide, flat heel; dense rubber that wraps up the sides; minimal compression under the heel. Every one of those choices is bad for running and good for pushing 152 kg across a floor. If the sled is where your race falls apart, this is the trade to make.
Where it gives ground. It is the worst runner in this guide, and it holds heat. You will feel the 8 km.
Best for: Athletes whose race is decided at the sled push and sled pull.

7. Reebok Nano X4
Best value in the guide · Research review — not yet tested in training
The default hybrid trainer of the category, and the lowest ticket on this list by a clear margin.
Why it matters here. The Nano is the shoe most people in a functional fitness gym are already wearing, and there is a reason: it has no catastrophic weakness. It grips acceptably, it is stable under load, and it will get you through a kilometre without misery. Nothing about it wins a station outright. Nothing about it loses one either.
Where it gives ground. Being good at everything means being best at nothing. If you have one clear weakness, a specialist shoe will serve you better.
Best for: First-timers, and anyone who has not yet found out where they are weak.

8. Reebok Nano X5
The current generation · Research review — not yet tested in training
The successor to the X4, with a review history that is already substantial.
Why it matters here. If you are buying a Nano new rather than hunting a discount, this is the current one. The generational changes in this line are usually incremental — upper construction and midsole tuning rather than a redesign — so the X4 remains a legitimate buy if you find it cheaper.
Where it gives ground. We have not trained in either generation. We are not going to tell you the X5 is meaningfully better than the X4 until we have.
Best for: Anyone buying a Nano at full price.

9. NOBULL Outwork
Best breathability · Research review — not yet tested in training
A thinner, cooler, more minimal trainer for athletes who overheat.
Why it matters here. Wall balls, burpees and lunges generate a lot of heat in a shoe with a dense upper. The Outwork runs thinner and cooler than the Metcon, with a flat, firm platform that does the job at the sled and under the sandbag.
Where it gives ground. Thinner means less protection over 8 km, and the ride is firm. Heavier athletes may find it harsh.
Best for: Athletes who run hot and value a flat, grounded feel.

10. New Balance Minimus TR
Best entry-level pick · Research review — not yet tested in training
A low-profile trainer that covers most of the demands at the lowest commitment.
Why it matters here. If you are not sure HYROX is going to stick, this is the honest recommendation. It is low, flat, stable and light — everything you need at the wall balls and the lunges — without spending premium-trainer money on a race you have not run yet.
Where it gives ground. Grip at the sled is the weak point, and the minimal cushioning is felt on the running legs.
Best for: Your first season, before you know what you are weak at.

The HYROX-branded shoe, and the one you cannot buy
PUMA is HYROX’s official footwear partner, which produces a predictable amount of search traffic and a predictable amount of confusion. Here is the situation, plainly.
The PUMA Deviate NITRO Elite HYROX is not sold on Amazon
This is the race-day shoe PUMA built specifically for HYROX, and the one you see on elite athletes at the World Championships. It is distributed through PUMA’s own channels and the official HYROX shop. Search for it on Amazon and you will be shown the standard Deviate NITRO 4 instead, which is a different shoe. We have no affiliate relationship that covers it and we are not going to point you at a substitute pretending it is the same thing.
The PUMA Velocity Nitro 3 HYROX is
This is the training-oriented model in the same collaboration, it carries the HYROX branding, and it is available on Amazon. It is the only shoe with the HYROX name on it that you can realistically buy there.
An honest caveat: it has a small number of buyer reviews so far. The rating is strong, but a strong rating across a handful of reviews tells you much less than a good rating across several hundred. We are listing it because it answers a question people are genuinely asking, not because we can vouch for it at the same confidence as the Metcon or the Nano.
If you have wide feet
This is the question that sends more people back to the returns page than any performance consideration, and most guides skip it entirely.
The pattern across this category: gym trainers generally run wider than running shoes. The Metcon and Nano platforms are built around a broad, flat forefoot because that is what gives you a stable base under load — and that same geometry happens to suit wide feet. Performance running shoes, especially the light ones like the Noosa and the Mach, are built narrow on purpose, because a narrow last holds the foot still at speed.
If you are a wide fitter in School A, the Endorphin Speed is the more forgiving of the running shoes here — its toebox is the roomiest of the group. If the running shoes still pinch, the honest answer is that you may be better served by a School B shoe and a slower run split than by a shoe that hurts for 8 km.
A note for women
Every shoe in this guide is made in a women’s version, and the lab measurements published for the men’s model do not transfer directly — weights and stack heights differ. The Open division loads are also different: 102 kg on the sled push rather than 152, 78 kg on the pull, a 10 kg sandbag, and a 4 kg wall ball to nine feet.
A lighter sled changes the grip calculation. At 102 kg, a running shoe with good forefoot traction — the Noosa or the Mach 7 — is a more defensible choice than it would be at Open men’s weight, because there is less force trying to break the outsole loose. We are writing a dedicated women’s guide; until it is up, that is the most useful adjustment to make from this one.
Four mistakes that cost people money
- Buying the winner of someone else’s list. A shoe that is optimal for a runner with a weak sled is the wrong shoe for a strong athlete with weak run splits. The award tells you what a reviewer valued, not what you need.
- Racing in shoes you have not trained in. Eight kilometres will find a hot spot that four will not. Whatever you buy, put at least three full sessions in it before you pin a number on.
- Assuming a higher stack means more comfort. Above roughly 38 mm you start trading stability for cushioning, and stability is what carries you through the farmers carry and the lunges. The tallest shoe is not the most comfortable shoe over a whole race.
- Buying two pairs to solve it. Some athletes do change shoes between training and race day, and for a competitive Pro athlete that can be defensible. For everyone else it doubles the spend to fix a problem that one well-chosen pair solves.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do HYROX in normal running shoes?
Yes, and most first-timers do. You will slip at the sled push and it will cost you time, but nothing about a running shoe makes the race impossible. If you are running your first one to find out what it is, wear what you own and buy afterwards, once you know where you are weak.
Do I need HYROX-specific shoes?
No. There is exactly one shoe line built specifically for the race, and the rest of this guide is made up of running shoes and gym trainers that happen to suit it. A well-chosen general trainer will serve you better than a branded shoe that does not match your weakness.
Should I wear grip socks with these?
Grip socks address a different problem — your foot sliding inside the shoe, rather than the shoe sliding on the floor. They are worth having and they are not a substitute for an outsole that grips.
What about the shoe rules in competition?
HYROX does not restrict footwear the way some sports restrict stack height. Wear what works. The constraint is the race, not the rulebook.
How often should I replace them?
The sled stations are unusually hard on an outsole — you are deliberately grinding rubber against a floor under load. If you train the sleds weekly, expect the outsole to wear out before the midsole does, which is the opposite of how running shoes normally die.

If the sleds are what beat you, buy the Nike Metcon 9 and accept a slower run. If the running legs are what beat you, buy the Saucony Endorphin Speed 5 and accept some slip. If neither stands out, or you have not raced yet, buy the Reebok Nano X4 and find out where you are weak before you spend more.
