Best Grip Socks 2026: Studio Socks vs In-Shoe Grip Socks

“Grip socks” is two different products sold under one name, and most buying guides only cover one of them. Studio grip socks are made to be worn barefoot-style on a mat, a reformer or a gym floor, with silicone on the sole so you do not slide. In-shoe grip socks came out of soccer: they have grip pads on the inside and the outside of the sock, so your foot stops sliding inside the shoe.
If you do Pilates, barre, yoga or floor-based mobility work, you want the first kind. If your foot moves inside your shoe on a sled push, a lunge or a hard change of direction, you want the second. Buying the wrong kind is the most common mistake in this category, so this guide covers both and tells you which is which. Our sourcing rules are at How We Test.
The short answer
| If you are… | Buy | Because |
|---|---|---|
| Doing Pilates, barre or yoga and want one safe pick | Ozaiic Pilates Socks | Combed cotton, silicone gel grips and ballet-style straps. Two separate hands-on tests picked it |
| Wanting your toes free to spread and grip | Toesox Low Rise Full Toe | Five-toe design with a grip sole, so each toe can press into the floor |
| Preferring open toes | Gaiam Grippy Studio (open-toe) | Toeless design with a grippy sole. Your toes touch the mat, the rest of your foot stays covered |
| Needing men’s or larger sizes | unenow Unisex Grip Socks | A unisex cut in several sizes. Most studio socks are one size and sized for women |
| Feeling your foot slide inside your training shoe | Trusox 3.0 Cushioned | Grip pads on both sides of the sock: one side holds your foot, the other holds the insole |
| Wanting the in-shoe idea for less money | LUX SportsLux Dual Grip | The same two-sided concept at a lower price than Trusox |
First, the honest part: the best-rated sock is not on Amazon
Two separate reviews tested studio grip socks hands-on: Garage Gym Reviews, and a panel of five Yahoo editors who wore 16 pairs for weeks. Both picked the same sock as best overall: Pointe Studio. We searched Amazon for it and it is not sold there. We also looked for Bombas’ gripper socks and the grip socks from lululemon and Alo. None of them showed up on Amazon either.
If you specifically want a Pointe Studio sock, buy it from Pointe Studio. We make nothing from that. We would rather tell you than quietly swap in a lookalike. Everything recommended below is sold on Amazon and backed by something we can point to.
Why this page has no scores
Our other guides give each product a Lab Score. This one does not, and here is why. No independent lab publishes friction measurements for socks, the way RunRepeat does for shoe outsoles. Without measurements, a score like “grip: 8.7” would be made up. Our rule is that a product needs evidence on at least four measured axes before it gets a number, and socks do not have that.
So we rank on what can be documented instead: how each sock is built, what it is made of, what outside testers found after wearing it, and what owners report after weeks of washing. It is less tidy than a number, and it is more honest.
What separates a good grip sock from a bad one
1. How much of the sole grips
| Grip pattern | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Full-sole silicone | Grip under the whole foot, including the arch | Reformer work and standing balance |
| Dots or hexagons | Grips well where it touches, with gaps in between | Mat work and general use |
| Zoned pads | Grip only under the ball of the foot and the heel | Lighter sessions. Can slide under the arch |
| Pads on both sides | Holds the foot to the sock and the sock to the insole | Wearing inside a shoe only |
2. Toe style
A closed toe is warmest and easiest. A five-toe sock lets each toe spread and press into the floor on its own. It also takes longer to put on. Toeless socks leave the toes bare on the mat and cover the rest of the foot.
3. Fabric
Cotton is soft and breathable but holds sweat. Synthetic blends dry faster. For a 45-minute studio class the difference is small. For a sweaty session it decides whether your foot slides inside the sock, which cancels out the grip on the outside.
4. Staying in place
Grip on the sole is useless if the sock twists on your foot. Straps across the top, a heel tab or a snug cuff keep it aligned. Look for at least one of the three.
5. Surviving the wash
Silicone grip wears away, and hot washes and dryers speed that up. Most makers recommend a cold wash, inside out, and air drying. Follow that and a good pair lasts months of regular classes.
Studio grip socks: for mat, reformer and floor work
1. Ozaiic Pilates Socks — best overall studio sock
- Combed cotton with 100% silicone gel grips on the sole
- Ballet-inspired straps across the top of the foot keep the sock from twisting
- Picked in two separate hands-on tests: best no-show (Garage Gym Reviews) and best affordable (Yahoo)
- One size, designed for women’s feet
This is the rare case where the popular choice and the tested choice are the same sock. The straps do the job a heel tab does on other socks: the grip stays under your foot, where you need it. It is also one of the cheapest well-made options, and it is sold in multi-packs.
Where it falls short: it comes in one size. If you wear a large men’s shoe, go to the unenow pick below.
2. Toesox Low Rise Full Toe — best five-toe sock
- 77% organic cotton, 19% polyester, 4% elastane
- Five separate toes and a grip sole
- A shaped heel so the sock does not bunch or twist
If your instructor keeps saying “spread your toes”, this is the sock that lets you. Each toe presses into the floor on its own, which is the whole point of the design. The downside is time: five-toe socks take longer to put on, and some people never get used to the feel.
Worth knowing: Yahoo’s testers found Toesox’s half-toe model starting to fray after two washes. That is a different model from this one, but wash these cold and inside out.
3. Gaiam Grippy Studio Socks — best toeless
- Open toe: toes are bare on the mat, the rest of the foot is covered
- Grippy sole
- Garage Gym Reviews picked Gaiam’s toeless grippy sock as its best toeless option
- One size
Toeless socks suit people who want to feel the mat with their toes but not with the rest of the foot, or who find full socks too warm. Gaiam is a yoga-first brand, and this is a simple, sensibly priced version of the idea.
4. unenow Unisex Grip Socks — best for larger feet
- Unisex cut in several sizes
- Cotton with non-slip dots on the sole
- Full-coverage design
This pick fixes a gap in the category: most studio grip socks come in one size, sized for women. If you are a man in a mixed class, or anyone with larger feet, a one-size sock will not stay put. In fairness: no outside tester has reviewed this sock. We picked it on its construction and on consistent owner feedback, and that is weaker evidence than the picks above.
In-shoe grip socks: for when your foot moves inside the shoe
This is a different product for a different problem. When you push a sled, drive out of a lunge or stop hard, your foot can slide forward inside the shoe even when the shoe itself grips the floor. The shoe holds, and your foot does not. In-shoe grip socks have silicone pads on both sides of the sole, so the sock grips your foot and the insole grips the sock.
Try one free fix first: lace your shoes with a heel lock, using the extra eyelet at the top. It stops a lot of foot movement. If your foot still moves after that, a grip sock is much cheaper than new shoes. We cover outsole grip, the other half of the problem, in Best HYROX Shoes 2026.
We found no published study measuring whether grip socks improve sled or lunge performance. They were designed for soccer, where foot movement inside the boot is a known problem. We think the same idea applies to HYROX, but that is our reasoning, not a measured result.
5. Trusox 3.0 Cushioned — the original
- Grip pads on the inside and outside of the sole
- Made in the USA, unisex, cushioned version
- TRU, the maker, calls it the original grip sock
A long-term review by FootballBoots.co.uk found that the grip works as promised: the pads hold the sock to the insole, and the inner pads hold the foot. The same review raised three problems. Compression is only average, the cuff can slide down on longer versions, and nobody knows yet how the pads hold up after many washes. Some wearers also find the inner pads uncomfortable at first.
Where it falls short: price. This is the most expensive sock on this page, per pair, by a wide margin.
6. LUX SportsLux Dual Grip — the in-shoe idea for less
- Two-sided grip, like Trusox
- Available in several lengths and multi-packs
- Designed for soccer cleats. The same two-sided idea applies inside a training shoe
This is the one to try if you are not sure in-shoe grip will help you. It costs a fraction of Trusox, so finding out is cheap. We could not find an independent test of it, only the maker’s own comparisons, which do not count as evidence. It is here because it applies the same proven idea at a lower price.
What we would buy
For studio classes: the Ozaiic Pilates Socks. Two outside tests recommend them, the straps keep the grip where it belongs, and a multi-pack covers a week of classes.
For foot movement inside a training shoe: fix your lacing first. If that is not enough, start with the LUX Dual Grip. If the idea works for you and you want the most tested version, move up to Trusox 3.0.
Frequently asked questions
What are grip socks?
Socks with rubber or silicone pads on the sole. Studio grip socks are worn without shoes for Pilates, barre or yoga; in-shoe grip socks stop your foot sliding inside the shoe during sprints, cuts and sled work.
How do you wash grip socks?
Most makers recommend turning them inside out, washing cold and letting them air-dry. Dryer heat wears the rubber grips down faster, which is the first thing to fail on most pairs.

Every sock here is marked research review: we have analysed construction, published hands-on tests and owner feedback, but we have not worn them ourselves. When that changes, this page will say so. Our full method is at How We Test.
