Best Kettlebells for a Home Gym (2026): 6 Picks and the Size to Start With

A kettlebell is one of the few pieces of gear that earns its floor space in any home gym: swings, goblet squats, carries, presses and rows from a single piece of cast iron. The catch is that most kettlebells look the same in a product photo, and the differences that matter (handle finish, coating, weight units and whether the bell is one solid casting) only show up once you train with it.
This guide sorts the kettlebells you can actually buy on Amazon by what you want to use them for. We checked every listing on Amazon on September 24, 2026, and compared them against the picks of two testers who publish their method: Garage Gym Reviews (scored on construction, durability, handle quality and weight range) and Physical Living (14 competition kettlebells from 9 brands compared side by side). These are research reviews, not hands-on tests. Our sourcing rules are at How We Test.
The short answer
| Pick | Best for | Finish | Units | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon Basics Cast Iron Kettlebell | Best value for most people | Painted, textured handle | lb | Solid cast iron and one of the most reviewed kettlebells on Amazon |
| Yes4All Powder Coated Kettlebell | Best grip for high reps | Powder coat | lb (9–88) | Powder coat holds chalk and sweat better than paint; weight tolerance stated on the listing |
| Yes4All Vinyl Coated Kettlebell | Best budget, floor-friendly | Vinyl | lb (5–100) | Garage Gym Reviews’ budget pick; the vinyl protects floors |
| Rage Fitness Cast Iron Kettlebell | Best for HYROX | Powder coat | kg (8–24) | Sold in kilograms, so you can match the race carry weights exactly |
| BowFlex SelectTech 840 | Best adjustable, small spaces | Plastic shell | lb (8–40) | One dial replaces six bells |
| Bells of Steel Adjustable Kettlebell | Best adjustable competition shape | Steel shell | kg | Competition-style shell with 0.5 and 1 kg plate steps |
Before you buy: four things that matter
- One solid casting. Look for “single-piece” or “one-piece” cast iron. Bells with a welded or screwed-on handle can loosen over time.
- The handle finish. A smooth, even handle matters more than anything else for swings and cleans. Rough paint or casting seams tear up your hands on high-rep work.
- Coating. Powder coat grips best with chalk. Vinyl is quieter and protects floors but can feel thick in the hand. Plain paint is fine for most people and wears with use.
- Pounds or kilograms. Most kettlebells on Amazon are sold in pounds. If you follow a program written in kilograms, or you train for HYROX, a kilogram bell saves you the guessing.
The picks
1. Amazon Basics Cast Iron Kettlebell — best value
- Solid cast iron with a textured, wide handle
- Sold as single bells in pound weights
- Among the most reviewed kettlebells on Amazon when we checked
If you want one or two bells for swings, goblet squats and carries, this is the safe default. The wide handle fits two hands for swings. It is sold in pounds, so if you need an exact kilogram weight, look at the Rage Fitness bell below.
2. Yes4All Powder Coated Kettlebell — best grip for high reps
- Powder-coated cast iron, wide smooth handle
- Sold from 9 to 88 lb
- Flat, non-slip base
- The listing states the weight tolerance: a 26 lb bell weighs between 25.22 and 26.78 lb
Powder coat is the finish most testers prefer for high-rep swings and snatches because it holds chalk and does not get slick as your hands sweat. It is also one of the few listings that tells you how accurate the weight is.
3. Yes4All Vinyl Coated Kettlebell — best budget, floor-friendly
- One-piece cast iron under a vinyl coating
- Sold from 5 to 100 lb
- Named the best budget kettlebell by Garage Gym Reviews
The vinyl coating makes it quieter and kinder to floors, which matters in an apartment. Garage Gym Reviews notes it is not the same quality as premium bells, but for the price it is the one they recommend.
4. Rage Fitness Cast Iron Kettlebell — best for HYROX
- Single-piece cast iron, powder coated
- Sold in kilograms, from 8 to 24 kg
The HYROX farmers carry uses two 16 kg bells for women Open and two 24 kg bells for men Open (HYROX Singles Rulebook, season 2026/27). Pound-based bells do not match those numbers: the closest are 35 lb (15.9 kg) and 53 lb (24 kg). A kilogram bell lets you train the exact race weight. It has fewer reviews than the big brands, so check the latest ones before you order.
5. BowFlex SelectTech 840 — best adjustable for small spaces
- Turn a dial to change the weight from 8 to 40 lb
- Replaces six bells: 8, 12, 20, 25, 35 and 40 lb
If you do not have room for a row of bells, an adjustable kettlebell is the space saver. The trade-off: the plastic shell is bulkier than a cast iron bell of the same weight, so it suits swings, goblet squats and rows better than fast cleans and snatches that roll the bell over your forearm.
6. Bells of Steel Adjustable Kettlebell — best adjustable competition shape
- Competition-style steel shell: the same size bell at every weight
- Changes weight in 0.5 kg and 1 kg steps with plates inside the shell
- The plates bolt in with an Allen key and a wrench, so changing weight takes a minute
Competition kettlebells keep the same shape and handle at every weight, so your technique does not change as you get stronger. This one gives you that in a single adjustable bell. It is slower to adjust than a dial, and it has far fewer reviews than the others on this list.
The best kettlebells you cannot buy on Amazon
To be straight with you: several of the kettlebells that testers rate highest are not sold on Amazon when we checked, so we cannot recommend them here with a link. Garage Gym Reviews’ top picks include REP Fitness, Rogue, Titan and GIANT Lifting, and Physical Living rates Kettlebells USA and Kettlebell Kings as its top two competition bells. If you want one of those, buy it from the brand’s own site. We do not earn anything from those purchases.
What size kettlebell should you start with?
The common starting point from kettlebell coaching schools such as StrongFirst is around 8–12 kg (18–26 lb) for most women and 12–16 kg (26–35 lb) for most men. Go heavier for two-handed swings and deadlifts, and lighter for presses and Turkish get-ups. If you can only buy one, pick the swing weight: it is the exercise you will do most.
| Goal | Women (typical start) | Men (typical start) |
|---|---|---|
| Swings, deadlifts, goblet squats | 12 kg / 26 lb | 16 kg / 35 lb |
| Presses, get-ups | 8 kg / 18 lb | 12 kg / 26 lb |
| HYROX farmers carry (race weight) | 2 × 16 kg | 2 × 24 kg |
A single bell or a set?
Start with one bell at your swing weight. Add a second, lighter bell for presses once you know you will keep training with them. A pair of the same weight only makes sense for double-kettlebell work or for the HYROX farmers carry. Buying a full set up front usually means paying for bells you will not use for months.
Frequently asked questions
What muscles do kettlebell swings work?
Mostly the back of your body: glutes, hamstrings and lower back, plus your core to keep the spine still and your grip to hold the bell. That is why swings carry over well to running and to the HYROX sled and carry stations.
Are cheap kettlebells worth it?
For swings, squats and carries, yes, as long as the bell is one solid casting and the handle is smooth. Premium bells mainly buy you a better handle finish, tighter weight accuracy and a coating that lasts longer.
Is an adjustable kettlebell as good as a fixed one?
For most strength work at home, yes. For fast ballistic moves like snatches, a fixed cast iron or competition bell feels better because the shape never changes.
