PUMA HYROX Shoes 2026: The Whole Line, Rated

PUMA is HYROX’s official footwear partner, and it is the only brand that has built shoes specifically for the race rather than adapting something that already existed. That produces a lot of search traffic and a lot of confusion, because the line has four models, they look similar, and PUMA’s own naming does not make the difference obvious.

The four are not variants of each other. They are a ladder, and each rung gives up something specific to gain something else. This guide tells you which rung you are on.

PUMA’s own positioning, in their words: the Elite is the lightest, sharpest race-day feel; the Velocity is the most versatile option; the Activate trades speed for stability and control. That is an unusually honest product ladder — most brands pretend every model is for everyone.

Notice that two of the four paths lead away from the expensive shoes. A carbon plate returns energy on the run and does essentially nothing for you at a sled — so buying the Elite to fix a weak station is spending the most money on the part of the race it cannot help.

The technology, briefly

Three names appear across the whole line and they are worth ten seconds each, because they map onto different parts of the race.

The one that matters most for HYROX is the least glamorous of the five. PUMAGRIP is on every model in the line, including the cheapest. The carbon plate is what you pay for, and it is the component with the narrowest benefit.

Which model for which station

Read the columns and the pattern is obvious: the Activate wins seven of nine segments and loses the one that is half the race. That is the whole argument for not buying a gym shoe for HYROX — and also the reason a gym shoe is the right call for an athlete whose run is already strong.

Why PUMA at all: the PUMAGRIP argument

Brand partnerships do not make a shoe good. But there is one technical reason PUMA has a real claim here, and it is not the HYROX logo.

PUMAGRIP is unusually good rubber, and grip is the property that decides a HYROX race. Of the nine segments, exactly one — rowing — does not care what is on your feet. The two sleds care more than everything else combined, and what they care about is whether your forefoot holds when you drive into the floor. A brand whose outsole compound is genuinely class-leading starts with an advantage that no amount of branding buys.

The independent lab figure we have for the line comes from the Velocity NITRO 4: 41.1% more flexible than the average running shoe, with a 33.7 mm heel and 24.0 mm forefoot, 4/5 torsional rigidity, and 67.5% / 74.2% energy return. That combination — flexible forefoot, low-ish stack, stiff against twist — is close to an ideal HYROX profile on paper: it bends where you need it to at the burpees and resists where you need it to under the sandbag.


The four models

1. PUMA Deviate NITRO Elite 4

The race-day shoe · Research review

Carbon PWRPLATE, NITROFOAM Elite, PUMAGRIP outsole. This is the shoe you see under elite athletes at the World Championships, and it is the most expensive thing PUMA sells for this race.

Who it is for. Athletes whose race is decided by minutes on the run, not seconds at the sled. A carbon plate returns energy on the run and does very little for you when you are pushing a sled — so this is a shoe that makes a fast runner faster and does not fix a weak station.

An honest caveat. It has barely any buyer review history on Amazon yet. A perfect rating across one review tells you nothing. We are describing what it is built to do, not vouching for how it holds up.

2. PUMA Deviate NITRO 4

The competitive all-rounder · Research review

Same carbon plate and same PUMAGRIP, in a construction built to survive daily training rather than peak for one race. This is the model with the most accumulated buyer feedback in the line, which matters.

Who it is for. Someone racing seriously who does not want to own two pairs. You give up some of the Elite’s sharpness and gain a shoe you can put six days a week into.

Where it gives ground. A plated shoe is still a plated shoe. Under a sandbag or on the sled pull, the stiffness that helps you run works against the ground feel you want.

3. PUMA Velocity NITRO 5

The versatile one · Research review

No plate. NITROFOAM cushioning and PUMAGRIP multi-surface traction. PUMA positions this as the entry point to the line and the pick for a first race.

Who it is for. Your first HYROX, or a training block where the shoe has to do everything: run, lift, jump, push. Without a plate you lose some return on the run and gain a shoe that does not fight you at the stations.

An honest caveat. The 5 is new enough that it has no meaningful review history yet. If you want the same idea with a track record behind it, the Velocity NITRO 4 has independent lab measurements and a longer history — it is the model in our main shoe guide.

4. PUMA Activate NITRO

The gym shoe · Research review

Mid-level NITROFOAM, PUMAGRIP ATR, and — the detail that matters — an increased toebox width. It is the only model in the line built around stability rather than forward speed.

Who it is for. Athletes whose training is mostly stations and circuits, and anyone in this line who has been fighting a narrow forefoot. PUMA running shoes run narrow; this one does not.

Where it gives ground. Eight kilometres. This is not the shoe for the running half of the race, and PUMA does not claim it is.

The two previous-generation models worth knowing about

PUMA iterates this line annually, and the outgoing generation usually stays on Amazon at a lower price with a much longer review history. For a shoe you are going to grind against a sled, that history is worth more than a version number.

PUMA Velocity NITRO 4

Why that profile is interesting. Flexible forefoot, low-ish stack, stiff against twist. It bends where you need it to at the burpee broad jumps and resists where you need it to under the sandbag, and the 33.7 mm heel is low enough to stay stable on the farmers carry. On paper it is close to an ideal HYROX profile.

Where it gives ground. The midsole firms up in the cold, and the fit leans narrow like most PUMA running models.

PUMA Deviate NITRO 3

The outgoing plated model · Research review

The generation before the Deviate 4, and the one people find when they search for the HYROX edition. Same idea — carbon plate, NITROFOAM, PUMAGRIP — one iteration back, and typically at a materially lower ticket.

Who it is for. Anyone who wants a plated PUMA and does not need the current version. Generational changes in this line are usually upper construction and midsole tuning rather than a redesign.

An honest note. We have not trained in either generation, so we are not going to tell you the 4 is meaningfully better than the 3. What we can say is that the 4 has the longer review history of the two on Amazon right now.

The HYROX-branded editions, and what is actually on Amazon

This is where most of the confusion lives, so here it is plainly.

The HYROX co-branded colourways are largely sold through PUMA’s own channels and the official HYROX shop, not Amazon. Search Amazon for the HYROX edition of the Deviate Elite and you will be shown the standard Deviate instead — a different shoe with the same silhouette.

The exception is the Velocity NITRO 3 HYROX, which does carry the HYROX branding and is available on Amazon. It is the previous generation of the Velocity, and it is the only shoe with the HYROX name on it you can realistically buy there. Its buyer rating is strong, though across a small number of reviews.

We have no affiliate relationship that covers PUMA’s own store, and we are not going to send you to a substitute pretending it is the same shoe. If you specifically want a HYROX colourway that Amazon does not carry, buy it from PUMA directly. We earn nothing from telling you that, which is rather the point.

Do you need a PUMA to do HYROX?

No. Being the official partner means PUMA paid for the association; it does not mean their shoe is the right one for your weakness. If the sleds are what beat you, a gym trainer with a flat, dense outsole will serve you better than any plated running shoe with a race logo on it.

What the partnership genuinely buys you is a line that was designed with the nine segments in mind rather than adapted afterwards, and an outsole compound that happens to be excellent at the one thing that decides the race. That is a real argument. The logo is not.

Frequently asked questions

Which PUMA is best for a first HYROX?

The Velocity NITRO 5, or the Velocity NITRO 4 if you want a model with independent lab data and a longer review history behind it. You do not need a carbon plate for a first race, and a plate will not fix the stations.

Is the carbon plate worth it for HYROX?

It depends entirely on where you lose time. A plate returns energy on the run. It does nothing at the sled, and the stiffness can work against you under load. If your run splits are already your strength, a plate is spending money to improve the part you are good at.

Can I buy the HYROX colourways on Amazon?

Mostly no. The Velocity NITRO 3 HYROX is there. The Deviate Elite HYROX editions are sold through PUMA’s own channels and the official HYROX shop.

Do PUMA shoes run narrow?

Their running models generally do. The Activate NITRO is the exception in this line — it is built with a wider toebox on purpose.

Velocity NITRO 5 or Deviate NITRO 4?

Plate or no plate, essentially. If you are chasing a time and the run is where you gain it, the Deviate. If you want one shoe for everything and the stations are where your race is decided, the Velocity.

Is the Velocity NITRO 4 still worth buying over the 5?

It is the only model in the line with published independent lab measurements, and it has a longer review history than the 5. If you want a shoe with evidence behind it rather than a version number, yes.

What is the difference between the Deviate NITRO 3 and 4?

One generation. Same carbon plate, same foam family, same outsole compound — the changes are typically upper construction and midsole tuning. We have not trained in either, so we are not going to claim the 4 is better.

How long do these last with sled work?

The sled stations are unusually hard on an outsole: you are deliberately grinding rubber against a floor under load. Expect the outsole to wear out before the midsole does, which is the opposite of how running shoes normally die. That applies to every shoe, not just PUMA.
