HYROX on a Budget: The Full Training Kit Without Expensive Gear

HybridGearLab is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program. We earn from qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you. It does not influence our picks — our method is published at How We Test.

HYROX looks like an expensive sport. Race weekends are full of sleds, SkiErgs, rowers, carbon-plated shoes and branded kit. You do not need any of that to reach the start line. Half of the race is running, one station needs nothing but floor space, and three of the stations that need machines are easy to train at a gym once a week. What is left can be covered with a pair of shoes and a handful of low-cost tools.

This page puts the budget pick from each of our guides into one kit, shows which stations you can train with almost nothing, and lists what to skip. Every product was checked on October 15, 2026: available on Amazon, rated 4.0 stars or higher, with at least 50 buyer reviews. None of these are hands-on tests. Our sourcing rules are at How We Test.

What HYROX actually asks of your gear

A HYROX race is eight 1 km runs, each followed by one station: SkiErg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jumps, Rowing, Farmers Carry, Sandbag Lunges and Wall Balls. You do not bring equipment to the race; the stations are set up for you. What you buy is only for training, and that changes what is worth paying for.

Where the money matters: shoes

If you buy one thing, buy shoes. You run 8 km in them and do every station in them, so this is the one item you use in every session. A budget cross-trainer does the job for a first race.

Reebok Nano X4 — the budget pick for HYROX

  • A firm, flat and stable base for sled pushes, lunges and wall balls
  • Light enough for 1 km repeats between stations
  • The best-value pick in our HYROX shoe guide

It is a gym shoe first. If running is your weak point, or you plan to run a lot of long easy kilometres in training, look at a dedicated running shoe in our hybrid running shoes guide. Sizes and colours on Amazon each have their own listing, so check yours before you order.

Nike MC Trainer 3 — if you mostly train in classes

The budget pick in our HIIT shoe guide. A simple, stable trainer for circuits, lifting and short runs. For the 8 km of running in a race, the Nano X4 is the better all-round choice.

Station gear that does the job

Wall Balls: ProSource Soft Medicine Ball

Wall balls are the last station, when your legs are gone, which is why they are worth practising at home. The race ball is 4 kg (about 9 lb) for women Open and 6 kg (about 13 lb) for men Open, so a 10 or 14 lb ball is the closest US size. Mark the target on a wall with tape: 2.70 m for women Open, 3.00 m for everyone else.

Sandbag Lunges: Yes4All Workout Sandbag

You fill it with sand yourself, so one bag covers every weight: 10 kg (22 lb) for women Open and 20 kg (44 lb) for men Open. Dragged on a strap across grass, it also stands in for the sled pull. When we checked, size M (25–75 lb) was out of stock and size L (50–125 lb) was available. Size M is the better fit for Open weights if it comes back; size L suits heavier loads and Pro weights.

Farmers Carry: two kettlebells

The race hands you two kettlebells for 200 m, so you need a pair, not one. Both options below are sold in pounds; for exact kilogram matches, see our farmers carry guide.

Optional: Kipika Weight Sled for the Sled Pull

A drag sled: you load your own plates and pull it with a strap or harness. It trains the sled pull and general leg drive, but it is not built to push like the race sled, and it needs grass or turf. If you have no outdoor space, skip it and use the sandbag on a strap.

Small things worth having

What you can skip, and where to train it instead

  • A rower. It is the one machine worth owning if your budget grows, but it is not a budget item. Use a gym rower once a week.
  • A SkiErg. Expensive, and it needs a wall mount or a floor stand. Train it at a gym in the weeks before the race.
  • A push sled. Hill sprints and heavy sandbag drives train the same leg drive. Use a gym sled when you can, and read our sled push guide for technique.
  • Carbon-plated race shoes. Not needed for a first HYROX. A stable cross-trainer is enough.
  • Anything HYROX-branded. The race uses standard equipment. You do not need an official logo to train.

A simple plan: what to buy first

  1. Shoes — you use them in every session.
  2. A wall ball — the last station, and the easiest to practise against any wall.
  3. A sandbag — lunges plus most of your sled work.
  4. Two kettlebells — the farmers carry, and grip work for the sled pull.
  5. Gloves and a jump rope — small items that make sessions easier.

With those five, plus one gym session a week for the SkiErg, rower and sled, you can train every part of the race. Our training timeline shows how many weeks you need, and the HYROX WOD guide has six workouts to use this kit.

FAQ

Can you train for HYROX without a gym?

Mostly, yes. Running, burpee broad jumps, farmers carry, sandbag lunges and wall balls all train at home with the kit above. The SkiErg, the rower and the push sled are the exceptions: a gym session once a week covers them.

Do you need special HYROX shoes?

No. Any stable shoe that you can run 1 km in and that grips on the sled turf works. A budget cross-trainer like the Reebok Nano X4 is enough for a first race.

What is the minimum gear for a first HYROX?

Shoes, a wall ball and a sandbag. Those three cover running, wall balls, lunges and a sled substitute. Add two kettlebells when you can.

Do you bring your own equipment to the race?

No. Every station is set up by the organisers. You bring your shoes, your clothes and, if you like, gloves.
