HYROX Workout Equipment: What You Actually Need at Home

A HYROX race uses eight stations, but you do not need eight machines at home to train for it. Some stations need almost nothing, some can be copied with cheap gear, and two (the SkiErg and the push sled) are expensive, bulky and easy to find in a gym. This guide goes station by station and tells you what is worth buying first, what you can fake, and what to skip.

The loads come from the official HYROX Singles Rulebook for the 2026/27 season (full table in our HYROX WOD guide). The products were checked on Amazon on September 23, 2026. None of these are hands-on tests. Our sourcing rules are at How We Test.

The gear

1. ProSource Soft Medicine Ball — for Wall Balls

  • Soft, padded shell that is comfortable to catch
  • Sold in many weights, including 8, 10, 14 and 20 lb
  • Double-stitched seams

Wall balls come last in the race, when your legs are already gone, which is why they are worth practising at home. Match the race weight as closely as US sizes allow: 4 kg is about 9 lb, 6 kg about 13 lb and 9 kg about 20 lb, so a 10, 14 or 20 lb ball is the closest match. Mark the target height on a wall with tape: 2.70 m for women Open, 3.00 m for everyone else.

2. Yes4All Workout Sandbag — for Sandbag Lunges

  • 1000D nylon with reinforced seams
  • Seven handles
  • Sand not included: you fill it to the weight you want

One bag covers every division: fill it to 10 kg (22 lb), 20 kg (44 lb) or 30 kg (66 lb) to match the women Open, men Open and men Pro lunge weights. It is also the cheapest stand-in for the sled: drag it on a strap across grass, or hug it and drive it forward on a hill.

3. Kettlebells — for the Farmers Carry

The race gives you two kettlebells for 200 m. You need a pair, not one. Two options on Amazon:

Want more options, including adjustable bells and more kilogram weights? See Best Kettlebells for a Home Gym.

Train the carry with the same weight you race with, or slightly heavier over shorter distances.

4. Concept2 RowErg — the one machine worth owning

If you buy one machine, make it a rower. It trains the rowing station directly and gives you low-impact engine work for every other day. When we checked, the Concept2 RowErg listing on Amazon had no direct Buy button, only other sellers’ offers (check the buying options before you order). Concept2 also sells it direct.

Optional: Kipika Weight Sled — for the Sled Pull

This is a drag sled: you load plates and pull it with a strap or harness. It trains the sled pull and general leg drive, but it is not built to push like the race sled. You need grass or turf; on concrete it scrapes and barely moves. If you do not have outdoor space, skip it and use the sandbag on a strap.

What to skip, and why

  • SkiErg. It is expensive and needs a wall mount or a floor stand. Train it at a gym once a week in the weeks before the race.
  • A push sled. The push sleds that testers rate highest, like REP’s and Rogue’s, are sold on the brands’ own sites, and the push sleds we found on Amazon had few reviews. They also need turf to work well. At home, heavy sandbag drives and hill sprints train the same leg drive.
  • Anything “HYROX-branded”. The race uses standard equipment. You do not need an official logo to train.

What we would buy

With a small budget: the ProSource wall ball and the Yes4All sandbag. Together they cover two stations and most of your sled work.

With more space and budget: add two kettlebells for the carry, then a rower.
