HYROX Farmers Carry: Weights, Distance and the Kettlebells to Train With

The farmers carry is station six of a HYROX race, and it is the one that looks easiest on paper: pick up two kettlebells, walk 200 metres, put them back. In practice it arrives after five runs and five stations, when your grip is already tired from the sled pull and the rowing, and it sits right before the sandbag lunges and wall balls. Lose your grip here and you lose time twice: once while you stand still, and again on the next 1 km run.

This guide gives you the exact HYROX farmers carry weight for every division in the 2026/27 season, the rules that decide whether your carry counts, a simple way to pace it, and the kettlebells you can buy on Amazon to train at race weight at home. The rules come from the official HYROX 26/27 Singles Rulebook. The products were checked on Amazon on October 14, 2026. These are research reviews, not hands-on tests: our sourcing rules are at How We Test.

HYROX farmers carry weight by division (2026/27)

Every division carries the same distance, 200 m, with one kettlebell in each hand. Only the weight changes:

DivisionPer handIn pounds (approx.)Total carried
Women Open16 kg35 lb32 kg
Men Open24 kg53 lb48 kg
Women Pro24 kg53 lb48 kg
Men Pro32 kg70 lb64 kg

At official races the bells are colour-coded: the rulebook lists 16 kg as white, 24 kg as grey and 32 kg as black. Picking the wrong colour is not a small mistake: the rulebook says a racer who uses the wrong weight has to repeat the whole station with the correct one, or is disqualified. According to HYROX equipment partner Centr, Women’s Doubles carry 16 kg and Men’s Doubles 24 kg per hand; mixed teams, relays and adaptive divisions should check their own rulebook.

The pound figures are conversions, rounded. Kettlebells sold in pounds rarely match race weight exactly, which matters when you buy (more on that below).

The rules that decide if your carry counts

  • Pick up and return in the box. The station starts and ends at the marked box next to the start/finish line. Your kettlebells must go back into the correct box with the handles upright. If they are not, the penalty is 30 seconds, unless you fix it before you leave the Roxzone.
  • Arms extended at your sides. Both kettlebells are carried with your arms straight down by your sides. No racking them on your shoulders.
  • You can put them down. Resting is allowed, as long as the kettlebells do not move forward when you set them on the ground. You cannot drop them a step ahead to gain distance.
  • Complete every lap. The 200 m is usually split into laps of the course. Missing a lap costs 3 minutes per lap.
  • Lanes are guidance. Lane markings are for orientation only, and faster racers may overtake when it is safe.
  • Chalk: only the event’s. Chalk is allowed at the sled pull and the farmers carry, but only the chalk the event supplies. Bringing your own chalk, or taking event chalk away from a station, is a 2-minute penalty.
  • Gloves yes, grips no. Gloves are on the permitted list; hand grips are not, and anything not listed is prohibited by default.

How to pace 200 metres

Most racers lose time at this station for one reason: they keep walking until their grip opens by itself. A planned set-down costs a few seconds. An unplanned one costs much more, because the bells hit the ground, your forearms are flooded and the next pick-up is slow.

  1. Set up before you lift. Chalk at the station, stand between the bells, hinge at the hips and pick both up at the same time with a flat back.
  2. Grip deep. Let the handle sit deep in your hand rather than on your fingertips, and squeeze hard from the first step.
  3. Walk fast, not long. Short, quick steps keep the bells from swinging. Look ahead, ribs down, shoulders packed.
  4. Plan your breaks. If you know you cannot carry all 200 m unbroken, decide in training where you will put the bells down, for example at the end of each lap, and do it before your grip fails, not after.
  5. Return them cleanly. Bells in the box, handles up, then go. A 30-second penalty for a sloppy return is the easiest time you will ever lose.

What to buy to train the farmers carry at home

You do not need a sled or a full gym to train this station. You need two kettlebells at, or close to, your race weight. The table below sorts the options we found on Amazon by what they are good for.

PickBest forSizes on the listingRace weights in kg?
REP Fitness KettlebellBest overall: exact race weights1 to 48 kg, single or pair16, 24 and 32 kg

LoGest Farmers Walk HandlesOverload with weight platesLoads 2-inch platesNot kettlebells

Every kettlebell here is cast iron and is listed in Amazon’s Sports & Outdoors kettlebell category. Check the size you need before you order: availability changes by weight, and the heaviest sizes sell out first.

1. REP Fitness Kettlebell — best overall

  • Listed from 1 kg to 48 kg, including 16, 24 and 32 kg, so every HYROX division can train at exact race weight
  • Sold as a single bell or as a pair
  • Gravity cast with a textured matte finish and both kg and lb markings, according to the listing

This is the easiest way to buy exactly what you will carry on race day. Because the range is in kilograms, there is no rounding: Women Open buys two 16s, Men Open and Women Pro buy two 24s, Men Pro buys two 32s.

2. Yes4All Powder Coated Kettlebell — best grip for long carries

  • Listed in kilograms: 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 32 and 40 kg
  • Powder coat finish, sold single or as a pair
  • The most reviewed powder-coated kettlebell in our search

Powder coat holds chalk better than glossy paint, which is what you want for long carries and high-rep swings. The 20 kg option is useful as a stepping stone for Men Open and Women Pro before you move to 24 kg.

3. Rage Fitness Cast Iron Kettlebell — Open and Women Pro in kg

  • Listed from 8 to 24 kg in single-piece cast iron with a powder coat
  • Wide handle and a flat base, with kg and lb markings

A good kilogram option if you race Women Open (16 kg) or Men Open and Women Pro (24 kg). The range stops at 24 kg, so Men Pro needs one of the two picks above.

4. Amazon Basics Cast Iron Kettlebell — budget, Women Open only

  • Sold in pounds, from 10 to 60 lb
  • The 35 lb bell is within half a kilogram of the 16 kg race weight
  • One of the most reviewed kettlebells on Amazon

If you race Women Open, a pair of 35 lb bells is a close and affordable match. For the other divisions it does not work as well: the listing jumps from 50 to 60 lb, so there is no bell near 24 kg (53 lb) or 32 kg (70 lb). In that case, buy in kilograms.

5. LoGest Farmers Walk Handles — overload with plates

  • A pair of steel handles that load standard 2-inch Olympic plates, with clip collars
  • Rubber-covered grip, per the listing

Handles are not what you will carry at HYROX, but they let you go heavier than race weight if you already own plates, which builds a grip reserve. Keep most of your carry training on kettlebells, because the handle shape and the way the bell sits against your leg are different.

For training only: chalk and gloves

At the race you can only use the event’s chalk, but at home a block of gym chalk such as Rage Fitness Gym Chalk lets you train the same routine: chalk, pick up, go. Gloves are permitted at HYROX; if you want a pair, the ihuan ventilated training gloves are our top pick in Best Gym Gloves 2026. Try them in training first: some people grip a kettlebell better bare-handed with chalk.

What we could not link

Centr, HYROX’s official equipment partner, sells its official competition kettlebell on Amazon, but it had no customer reviews when we checked, so we are not recommending it yet. It is also a premium product: for training, any of the cast-iron bells above at the right weight does the job.

A 4-week farmers carry block

Add this once or twice a week, after a run or at the end of a session so your grip learns to work when it is tired, like it will on race day.

WeekSessionLoad
14 × 50 m, rest 60 sRace weight or one size lighter
24 × 100 m, rest 60 sRace weight
31 km run + 200 m carry, 3 roundsRace weight
4200 m unbroken, then 2 × 50 mRace weight; heavier only if 200 m felt easy

If you are not yet at race weight, add 1 to 2 kg at a time. For full sessions that combine the carry with the lunges and wall balls, see the workouts in HYROX WOD: 6 workouts.

Frequently asked questions

How heavy is the farmers carry in HYROX?

In the 2026/27 season: 2 × 16 kg for Women Open, 2 × 24 kg for Men Open and Women Pro, and 2 × 32 kg for Men Pro, according to the official rulebook.

How far is the HYROX farmers carry?

200 metres for every division. It is the sixth station, between the 1,000 m row and the 100 m sandbag lunges.

Can you put the kettlebells down during the farmers carry?

Yes. The rulebook allows you to rest, as long as the kettlebells do not move forward when you put them on the ground.

Can you use chalk or gloves for the HYROX farmers carry?

Gloves, yes. Chalk, only the chalk the event provides at the station; your own chalk is a 2-minute penalty. Hand grips are not allowed.

What weight kettlebell should I buy for HYROX training?

Buy your race weight in kilograms, as a pair. If that is too heavy today, start one size lighter (for example 12 kg for Women Open or 20 kg for Men Open) and work up.

What is the penalty for not returning the kettlebells correctly?

30 seconds, if they are not in the correct box or not upright. There is no penalty if you fix it before you leave the Roxzone.
